Mayor Rybak Proposes Tim Dolan as Interim Chief
Northside Minneapolis Native is Widely Respected With Deep Community Roots
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today announced that he wants Assistant Police Chief Tim Dolan to become Interim Police Chief, once the job is vacated by William McManus. Dolan is a Northside Minneapolis native, a 23-year veteran of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) and has served as the #2 in command, running day-to-day operations under Chief McManus.
“I have great respect for Chief McManus and wish him and his family the best,” Rybak said. “He made a great contribution to the city and initiated a number of important programs. McManus brought a fresh perspective when we needed it and now it’s time to make that perspective a reality.”
“We will miss Chief McManus but we will not miss a beat protecting public safety,” Rybak said. “We are fortunate to have extremely strong leadership in our police department. I am confident that we can have a seamless transition to continue our aggressive focus on keeping Minneapolis safe.”
“Tim Dolan is widely respected and has deep roots in the community. He is a northside native whose finger is on the pulse of public safety issues throughout the city. Tim has led some of the city’s most effective public safety initiatives and understands every facet of the police department. I have complete confidence that Tim will guide our police department and our city through this transition,” Rybak said.
Prior to becoming Assistant Chief, Dolan’s service of leadership in the MPD spans more than two decades and touches nearly every part of the MPD. He was a Deputy Chief, Inspector and Commander of the 4th Precinct (north Minneapolis), Commander of Narcotics, Commander of Emergency Response, and Director of Training. Dolan has served in numerous command and leadership capacities in nearly every part of the city. As Interim Chief, Dolan would assume all the responsibilities of the Police Chief until a permanent replacement is conformed by the Mayor and City Council.
“Chief McManus was a friend and colleague and I will miss working with him,” Dolan said. “I am deeply honored that the Mayor has chosen me to lead the police department during this transition and I will do my best to ensure that we keep our focus on protecting public safety. We especially need to get ahead of the curve in north Minneapolis, and I am already working to bring that area the extra officers they need now. I have a deep sense of ownership with this - it’s more than just a job, it’s personal.”
Mayor Rybak will formally submit Assistant Chief Tim Dolan as Interim Police Chief to the City’s Executive Committee the week of March 27. If designated by the Executive Committee, Dolan would serve as Interim Chief until a new Police Chief is confirmed.
