Mayor Rybak Recruits STEP UP Youth Workers

“Project Geek Squad” Training Will Teach Computer Repair, Donate Computers

NEWS RELEASE
January 13, 2005

WHAT:

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is teaming up with Geek Squad Agents to help recruit youth for the City of Minneapolis’ STEP UP summer jobs program with a computer repair training in North Minneapolis. Mayor Rybak wants more youth working this summer and hopes that promoting technology related career opportunities will get youth excited about their future.

Geek Squad Agents will facilitate a computer repair workshop with 30 North High School students using donated computers. Geek Squad held a donation drive for computers last weekend at its store at 50th Avenue and France in Edina. Upon completion of the workshop, each student will take home a functional computer. During the workshop Mayor Rybak will encourage the youth to join the STEP UP jobs program and pursue technology careers.

“As Minnesota competes in an increasingly global economy, this state’s single greatest asset is the children of the next generation of Minneapolis. These youth already have the cultural competency required in our global economy. By giving our youth the technical skills to compete we are helping them help keep our region strong,” Mayor Rybak said.
