January 6, 2006
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will celebrate the New Year and City Inauguration Ceremonies with a “Prayer Service for the City” featuring song and scripture from local congregations. Mayor Rybak invites the public to join him in the service, which will take place at 4:00 PM on Sunday, January 8th at Temple Israel.
“This will be a service of song, reading and prayer, expressing our commitment as communities of faith to work in collaboration with our civic leaders for the good of the city,” said Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde from St. John's Episcopal Church, who is part of a clergy team organizing the event. “There will be a high school music group and poetry reading by youth from the Peace Foundation.”
Minneapolis congregations sponsoring the prayer service include Temple Israel, St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Plymouth Congregational Church, and St. John's Episcopal Church. The service is free, open to the public, and welcomes people of all faiths.
“Faith communities have been an integral partner with the City of Minneapolis on so many of our priorities,” Mayor Rybak said. “Faith leaders have been on the front lines for affordable housing, hurricane relief, environmental justice, human rights, and so many of the toughest challenges facing our community. I am honored to join with them again in song and prayer as we herald a new year and new city leadership,” Rybak said.
Mayor Rybak and the newly elected City Council Members were sworn in at Minneapolis’ Inaugural Day Ceremony held earlier this week.
